Scientists at Penn State University have proposed a novel method for probing Earth's interior by leveraging seismic waves generated by thunderstorms and detected using fiber-optic cable networks.

The research builds on the observation that a portion of the energy carried by thunder penetrates the Earth's crust, triggering what are termed 'thunderquakes.' However, these natural seismic signals are inherently complex, making it challenging to extract clear imaging data.

The Penn State team has developed a new model designed to help interpret this complexity. Using this model, the researchers were able to reconstruct the terrain beneath the university's campus.

Traditionally, seismic imaging of the Earth's interior relies on waves from earthquakes or human-induced events like explosions. Utilizing thunder offers a potential alternative that harnesses a natural phenomenon for localized geological study without requiring external seismic sources.
