Singapore-based Thunes has deepened its strategic alliance with UnionPay International (UPI) to streamline cross-border money movement into mainland China. The integration allows financial institutions and payment providers to route instant payouts directly to UnionPay cards held by customers at 79 major Chinese banks, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Bank of China.

Previously, cross-border transfers to China were constrained by low daily transaction caps, forcing users to split large payments across multiple days. By leveraging UnionPay’s updated payment infrastructure, Thunes now allows network members to process up to $10,000 USD per recipient cardholder in a single transaction. This change aims to eliminate settlement delays and the operational burden associated with split payments.

"Strengthening our strategic alignment with UnionPay International marks a major evolution in how money moves globally," said Chloé Mayenobe, Deputy CEO at Thunes. The collaboration utilizes a single API connection, allowing Thunes' global network members to access the Chinese card ecosystem without the high setup costs or technical hurdles typically associated with such international financial infrastructure.
