Tianjin University Celebrates 131 Years of Operation
China's first modern university, Tianjin University (TJU), celebrated its 131st anniversary on October 2, 2026. The university has introduced new educational programs and technological innovations.

Tianjin University (TJU), China's first modern higher education institution, marked its 131st anniversary on October 2, 2026. The milestone highlights the university's role in fostering global innovation and social progress.
The university has introduced the "TJU Plan 3.0" framework for engineering education, aimed at preparing students for future challenges. Education has expanded into emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and brain-computer interfaces (BCI). TJU has also established China's first undergraduate programs in brain science and technology, and bio-manufacturing.
TJU is also focusing on nurturing young researchers through initiatives like the "U35 Plan." This program encourages researchers under 35 to rapidly advance to professorships, fostering a dynamic research environment.
The university's research has yielded significant breakthroughs. In medical technology, TJU developed the "Shengong-Shengao" system, China's first approved BCI medical device for diagnosing cognitive impairments. The system substantially reduces diagnostic time. Over 20 "Shengong" devices have transitioned from laboratory to clinical application.
Research at TJU also encompasses high-precision measurement and energy storage technologies. The university's contributions to national research have been recognized with multiple awards. Furthermore, TJU's departments of Chemistry, Engineering, and Materials Science rank among the top 1% globally according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI).
