Tianjin University Marks 131 Years with Focus on Future Engineering and Medical Tech
Tianjin University (TJU), China's first modern university, is celebrating its 131st anniversary. The institution highlights advancements in future-focused engineering education and a brain-computer interface diagnostic tool.

Tianjin University (TJU), recognized as China's first modern university, is commemorating its 131st anniversary on October 2, 2026. The milestone underscores the institution's commitment to contributing to global innovation and societal progress.
The university is emphasizing the cultivation of future-ready talent through its "TJU 3.0" plan for emerging engineering education. This initiative strategically positions TJU in 11 cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence and embedded intelligence, and has led to the establishment of China's first undergraduate programs in brain-computer interface science and technology, as well as in biofabrication.
To foster early-career researchers, TJU has implemented the "U35 Plan," designed to accelerate the appointment of exceptional researchers under 35 to professorships. This program aims to create a dynamic research environment led by younger academics.
In medical technology, TJU has achieved a significant breakthrough with the "Shengong-Shengao" system. This brain-computer interface (BCI) device is the first of its kind approved in China for diagnosing cognitive impairment, reducing diagnostic time from days to 30 minutes. The university's research contributions were also recognized in 2025 with five National Science and Technology Awards.
