Tianjin University (TJU), established as China's first modern university, observed its 131st anniversary on October 2, 2026. The institution has emphasized its role in cultivating future-oriented expertise and driving scientific innovation.

The university has introduced "TJU Plan 3.0," a framework aimed at educating future engineers and addressing the evolving needs of emerging industries. TJU has also launched China's first undergraduate programs in brain-computer science and technology, and in biomanufacturing. To foster young researchers, the "U35 Plan" fast-tracks exceptional individuals under 35 to full professorships, encouraging a dynamic, youth-led research environment.

Significant advancements have been made in medical technology. The "Shengong-Shengao" system, a brain-computer interface (BCI) medical device for diagnosing cognitive impairment, received approval in China. Developed by a team led by Professor Liu Xiuyun, the system reduces diagnostic time for conditions like hydrocephalus from days to approximately 30 minutes. Over 20 "Shengong" series devices have transitioned from research to clinical application, benefiting numerous patients.

Academically, TJU's disciplines in Chemistry, Engineering, and Materials Science are ranked globally within the top 1‰ according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI). In 2025, researchers from TJU were lead contributors to five National Science and Technology Awards. The university continues to invest in strategic research areas and initiatives focused on human well-being.
