TikTok CEO predicts AI-driven scientific breakthroughs within three years
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew anticipates that artificial intelligence will lead to significant scientific breakthroughs in fields such as physics, biotech, and chemistry within the next three years.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will drive major scientific breakthroughs across various sectors within the next three years. Speaking at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore, Chew highlighted the rapid advancements in AI that are unlocking possibilities beyond current applications.
Chew suggested that breakthroughs in physics, biotech, chemistry, and material science are highly probable due to AI. He noted that his employer, TikTok's parent company ByteDance, is expanding its AI research beyond consumer-facing applications. The company's Seed research team recently unveiled Protenix-v2, an AI model designed for biomolecular structure prediction and design, which holds potential for drug discovery.
While acknowledging that the short-term impact of AI might be overestimated, Chew believes its long-term potential is underestimated. He described the current trend in scientific progress driven by AI as being on a steep curve, indicating that we are at the beginning of AI's capabilities. This development also raises questions about aligning AI systems with human ethical boundaries.
Chew's optimism aligns with a broader trend of technology giants investing heavily in AI-driven scientific research. Similar initiatives, involving billions of dollars, are underway to develop AI models for understanding cellular behavior and accelerating biological research.
Despite the positive outlook, Chew also cautioned about the risks associated with AI's growing capabilities, particularly concerning cybersecurity. He pointed to potential issues with autonomous AI agents, such as unintended purchases or the exploitation of vulnerabilities, necessitating new defensive strategies.
