TinyURL Introduces Preview Page for Legacy API Links

TinyURL has introduced a preview page for links generated via its 23-year-old API endpoint. The move aims to encourage migration to a newer API and enhance platform security.

9 October 2026

TinyURL has begun phasing out its 23-year-old API endpoint by implementing a preview page for all links created through the legacy system. This interstitial page features a countdown timer that automatically redirects users to the original destination while informing them of the API's deprecation.

The original API, which allowed link shortening with just a URL, was susceptible to abuse. Retiring it is a critical step for enhancing platform security and reducing the burden on abuse prevention teams. By transitioning to a newer, authenticated API, TinyURL can implement more robust controls, such as blocking IP addresses with poor reputations and restricting problematic domains.

TinyURL strongly encourages all users of the deprecated API to migrate to its modern, OpenAPI-standard based API. The new interface offers enhanced features, including analytics and branded domains. Migrating to the new API will also eliminate the preview page for newly created links.

The preview page is a temporary measure to facilitate a smooth transition. TinyURL has not set a firm timeline for the complete retirement of the legacy API but urges users to begin migrating to the new API as soon as possible to avoid future disruptions.
