TIOBE Index: Julia Programming Language Returns to Top 20

The TIOBE Programming Community Index for October 2026 shows Python retaining the top spot. The Julia programming language has re-entered the top 20 after an absence of approximately three years.

12 October 2026

The TIOBE Programming Community has released its October 2026 index of programming language popularity. Python remains the most popular language with a 19.23% share, despite a 5.23% year-over-year decrease. The C programming language follows at second place with 11.33%, and C++ is third with 8.87%.

A notable change in this month's ranking is the return of the Julia programming language to the top 20, marking its first appearance in this tier in approximately three years. TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen stated that Julia's re-entry might signify a gradual increase in its popularity. The language is recognized for balancing a high level of abstraction and a user-friendly development experience with computational performance comparable to traditional high-performance languages.

This balance positions Julia as a strong candidate for fields like scientific computing and data analysis, where both efficiency and development speed are critical. While Python is widely used for its simplicity and rapid development capabilities, it may face performance limitations in computationally intensive tasks. C++ offers superior execution speed but comes with a steeper learning curve.

Other languages within the top rankings include C#, JavaScript, Visual Basic, R, SQL, and Rust. The report suggests that Julia's ability to maintain a stable position within the top 20 will depend on future trends and adoption.
