Startup Augmental has launched the MouthPad, a device placed inside the mouth that enables users to control computers using their tongue. Founded by Tomás Vega, the company aims to offer an alternative to surgical brain-computer interfaces, such as Neuralink, by focusing on solutions that can be used immediately.

The MouthPad resembles a partial dental retainer with a central trackpad. Users can navigate a cursor and perform clicks through tongue movements. The device also features a head-control mode, where head movements steer the cursor while tongue gestures act as buttons, designed for individuals with limited hand mobility.

Vega, who has stuttered since childhood, emphasizes the importance of technology becoming invisible. "Technology should disappear so that you see a human involved," Vega stated. Augmental's goal is to provide assistive technology that is discreet and offers users a natural control experience.

The device's development originated from Vega's research at MIT's Media Lab, where he sought to create a high-bandwidth interface without surgical intervention. Prior to founding Augmental, Vega worked at Neuralink but found their approach too slow for many needing assistance.

MouthPad utilizes capacitive sensing and requires a custom fit for each user's mouth. The device is engineered to withstand saliva and tongue movements, and it pairs with a companion app that expands its functionality with shortcuts and context-aware menus.
