Leading venture capital firms are backing the majority of new unicorns created in 2026, according to Crunchbase data. Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator stand out as the most active investors in companies that have achieved unicorn status this year.

Crunchbase data reveals a significant increase in unicorn creation, with 250 companies reaching the $1 billion valuation threshold by August 15, 2026, up from 193 in the same period of 2025. Key sectors contributing to this growth include robotics, AI labs, healthcare, biotech, financial services, and AI infrastructure.

Geographically, U.S.-headquartered companies dominated, accounting for 56% of the new unicorns, while Chinese firms represented 19%. A substantial 75% of the total funding, amounting to $74 billion, was raised by these companies in 2026. Deal volume also saw a peak in 2026 with 329 transactions, although the initial funding rounds for many of these companies began much earlier, some as far back as 2012.

The top 10 most active investors by number of investments in this cohort include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and BoxGroup, alongside the leading trio. Y Combinator is noted as the sole accelerator, and BoxGroup as the sole seed-stage investor on this list.
