Technology companies in Southeast Asia and India have significantly increased their use of debt financing in recent years. Data indicates a growing interest in debt as an alternative to venture capital, particularly as companies shift focus from growth-at-all-costs to sustainable development.
Leading lenders to the tech sector in the region include Indian firms like Alteria Capital and BlackSoil Capital, both having completed 27 debt rounds. Trifecta Capital and InnoVen Capital India are also significant players in India, while Singapore-based InnoVen Capital SEA has conducted 15 rounds in Southeast Asia.
Over the past six years, the largest debt financing packages have gone to prominent tech companies. India's BYJU'S received a $2.4 billion debt facility from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, and Singapore's Grab secured $2 billion from a syndicate including J.P. Morgan and HSBC.
Other major players like OYO Rooms and Ola have also raised hundreds of millions in debt. This trend highlights the growing importance of debt as a financing instrument for technology companies' expansion and operations in the region.
