Tourism Authority of Thailand Designates Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession a Signature Event

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with Ubon Ratchathani Province and various partners, has designated the 125th Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession as a Signature Thailand Event. The festival, running from July 25-31 with its main program from July 28-30, seeks to preserve traditional elements while introducing new participatory features to enhance global reach.

Rooted in Buddhist Lent traditions of candle offerings, the procession has grown into a significant display of faith, craftsmanship, and local identity. Its enduring nature is attributed to the collective efforts of temple communities, candle masters, educational institutions, and residents dedicated to preserving these specialized skills.

TAT stated that elevating these local traditions aims to increase international awareness, encourage longer tourist stays, and channel greater economic value to local communities and artisans. This effort is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Thailand's cultural influence by promoting distinctive regional celebrations to a wider audience.

This year's event includes enhanced lighting installations and light-and-sound performances that blend traditional storytelling with contemporary elements. Additionally, large sculptures of a popular Thai cartoon character will serve as illuminated landmarks. Visitors will also have opportunities to engage in hands-on workshops focusing on traditional crafts like candle carving and wax flower making.
