Toyota develops new modular 1.5-liter engine for hybrid vehicles
Toyota has unveiled a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine designed specifically to integrate into its next generation of hybrid and plug-in hybrid platforms.

Toyota has developed a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine designed to serve as the core component for its upcoming hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Unlike evolutionary updates to existing engines, this unit was designed from the ground up, with the engine, hybrid system, and power electronics integrated into a single, compact powertrain.
By prioritizing electrification at the design stage, Toyota aims to reduce mechanical friction and energy loss while optimizing thermal management. These engineering improvements are expected to deliver a fuel efficiency gain of more than 15 percent compared to current models. The system also incorporates proprietary silicon carbide power electronics to further minimize energy waste.
The new engine is a key feature of Toyota’s "multi-path" platform strategy. Rather than retrofitting traditional internal combustion platforms for hybrid use, the company has prioritized the requirements of electric systems first, ensuring compatibility across different power sources. This approach also allows for a lower hood profile, which the company claims will improve both the aerodynamic efficiency and styling flexibility of future vehicles.
