Toyota to Launch Century Luxury Sedan in Global Markets
Toyota plans to expand its Century model, traditionally a vehicle for Japan's elite and positioned against brands like Rolls-Royce, to international markets.

Toyota is preparing to introduce its ultra-luxury Century sedan to global markets, according to reports. The vehicle, long considered a symbol of Japanese prestige and exclusivity, is intended to compete in the high-end automotive segment.
Toyota's Chairman, Akio Toyoda, showcased the Century SUV at an event in Detroit, signaling the brand's international ambitions. He sought feedback from American automotive industry figures regarding the vehicle's global positioning.
Introduced in the 1960s, the Century has served as the preferred car for Japan's imperial family, prime ministers, and top business executives. It has traditionally been a chauffeur-driven vehicle, representing the pinnacle of Toyota's automotive offerings within Japan.
Recent efforts by Toyota have focused on elevating Century to a standalone brand, even above Lexus, with the introduction of new concept cars and a dedicated English website. Industry analysts suggest that while sales volumes may not be the primary driver, the global push for Century aims to establish a stronger presence in the ultra-luxury market, currently dominated by European manufacturers.
The latest Century model, which retains elements of hand-craftsmanship, starts at approximately $115,000 in Japan, making it Toyota's most expensive passenger car. The company sold around 500 Century units in Japan last year. An international rollout could enhance brand prestige and potentially drive interest in other Toyota vehicles.
