Toyota's EV Battery Plans Certified by Japanese Ministry
Toyota Motor Corporation has received certification from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) for its next-generation electric vehicle battery development and production plans.
Toyota City, Japan – Toyota Motor Corporation announced it has received certification from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) for its development and production plans for next-generation batteries and all-solid-state batteries. This certification falls under the Japanese government's "Supply Assurance Plan for Batteries," aimed at bolstering domestic battery production capabilities.
The certification covers the production of next-generation batteries (performance version) by Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, Inc. (PPES) and Primearth EV Energy Co., Ltd. (PEVE), which will be renamed TOYOTA BATTERY Co., Ltd. effective October 1, 2024. Production is slated to begin gradually from 2026. Toyota's research and development, as well as production plans for all-solid-state batteries, were also certified.
METI's policy, established under the Economic Security Promotion Act, seeks to strengthen the production infrastructure for batteries, designated as critical materials. The initiative provides government support to maintain and enhance manufacturing capabilities and technologies within Japan's battery industry, encompassing equipment and material suppliers.
Toyota aims to contribute to the advancement of the battery industry in Japan and reinforce its production infrastructure through these efforts. By enhancing battery competitiveness, the company also seeks to improve the marketability of electrified vehicles and achieve carbon neutrality through a multi-pathway approach.
