TP-Link Faces US Lawsuits Over China Ties and Router Security

Telecommunications firm TP-Link is encountering escalating legal challenges in the United States. Florida and three additional states have initiated lawsuits against the company. The core allegations suggest TP-Link deceived consumers regarding its ties to China and the potential security vulnerabilities of its routers to exploitation by Chinese state actors.

These legal actions were filed yesterday, approximately six months after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implemented a broad ban on consumer-grade routers manufactured wholly or partially outside the US. While numerous router manufacturers have secured exemptions to this ban, TP-Link has not yet received such an approval.

Among the companies granted exemptions are Netgear, Asus, Adtran, Amazon's Eero subsidiary, Calix, Nokia, and SpaceX's Starlink division. Consequently, TP-Link is currently prohibited from selling its newest Wi-Fi 8 routers in the US. However, models that received approval prior to the ban can still be sold.

The lawsuits underscore growing concerns within US regulatory bodies regarding the security implications of technology products with potential links to China and the protection of domestic markets.
