Translumina Initiates Multinational Trial on Drug-Coated Balloons for Complex Coronary Artery Disease

Translumina Therapeutics has initiated the SPARX Global Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT), a multinational study designed to compare drug-eluting stents (DES) against drug-coated balloons (DCB) in patients with complex coronary artery disease. The trial aims to generate comparative evidence on the safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes of a 'leave nothing behind' treatment strategy.

The study seeks to address clinical questions regarding the role of DCBs in treating complex coronary lesions. As part of this comparison, it will also provide head-to-head data between two established paclitaxel-coated balloon technologies. The trial will enroll 1,380 patients across 10 countries, with a two-year follow-up period.

According to the study's rationale, permanent metallic implants like DES may be associated with late adverse events. DCBs, which leave no permanent implant, offer an alternative therapeutic approach, but randomized evidence in complex coronary artery disease has been limited. The SPARX trial intends to strengthen this evidence base.

The SPARX trial is sponsored by Translumina Therapeutics. Registered data can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov under identifier NCT07397845. The results are expected to inform future clinical practices and international guideline recommendations.
