Travel industry groups form coalition for biometrics in travel

Key players in the air transport and travel sector, including ACI EUROPE, Amadeus, IATA, IDEMIA Public Security, and SITA, have announced the formation of the Responsible Biometrics Travel Industry Coalition. The coalition aims to promote the secure and voluntary use of biometric technologies in travel across the EU. It is calling on European Union lawmakers to ensure that the upcoming Digital Omnibus legislation supports the use of biometrics while protecting passenger choice and privacy.

The coalition emphasizes that a balanced regulatory approach can lead to a more seamless and convenient travel experience for air passengers. It seeks to ensure the responsible deployment of biometric solutions, coupled with strong data protection safeguards. While the Digital Omnibus proposal intends to simplify the EU's digital rulebook and foster innovation, the coalition warns it may unintentionally restrict the voluntary use of biometrics.

Biometric identification can streamline travel by reducing repeated document checks, thereby improving passenger flow management and airport capacity utilization. The coalition has also released a manifesto committing to the responsible use of biometrics and advocating for legislative actions to facilitate secure and efficient travel in Europe. The manifesto highlights the need for technology-neutral rules that allow for voluntary use of biometric data, provided appropriate safeguards are in place, and offer passengers alternative, non-biometric options.
