Trump Administration Rolls Back Biden-Era Fuel Efficiency Standards

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has finalized new rules for fuel efficiency standards, reversing those set by the Biden administration. Previous standards aimed for new vehicles to average 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031. The newly established threshold has been reduced to 34.9 miles per gallon.

President Donald Trump announced over the weekend the reversal of these fuel efficiency standards, stating on his social media account that the changes would "terminate" what he termed a "ridiculous EV mandate." Despite a past relationship with Elon Musk, Trump has been critical of electric vehicles, referring to them as "environmental monsters."

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the previous administration's fuel efficiency standards "made our roads less safe and drove up costs for hardworking Americans." The Department of Transportation estimates the relaxed standards will lower the average cost of a new vehicle by $1,300 and potentially save lives by encouraging new car sales.

Industry groups have expressed divided opinions. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major U.S. automakers, called the new rules "the right call" given market conditions and consumer demand. Environmental groups, such as the Sierra Club, have strongly criticized the changes, warning of increased fuel consumption, higher gasoline prices, and poorer air quality.
