Public Citizen submitted complaints to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The group argues that the ads potentially breach laws prohibiting the use of taxpayer funds for propaganda and restricting political activity by federal employees.
One ad, titled "The Final Battle," reportedly uses footage and audio from a Trump campaign ad released in 2024. The primary difference cited is the payment source: the U.S. government in the recent ad, versus the Trump campaign committee previously. The ad features Trump speaking about combating the "deep state" and "warmongers."
The White House has characterized these recent advertisements as public service announcements. The complaints raise questions about the appropriate use of government resources and the distinction between official communications and campaign messaging.
