Trump attempts to rename AI 'super intelligence'

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he signed a document purporting to "officially" change the name of artificial intelligence to "super intelligence." The attempted rebranding of the technology sector came during a meeting with tech executives at the White House.

Trump described the name change as "morally binding" and claimed the document was signed by industry leaders. Specifics regarding the document's binding nature or content remained unclear, and the White House has not provided additional details despite requests.

The name change effort comes weeks before midterm elections, where public concern over AI's rapid advancement is shaping up as a significant issue, according to polls. Trump has a history of focusing on branding, previously attempting to rename geographical features such as Lake Ontario to "Lake America."

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who also attended the luncheon, described the document as a "statement of principles" called "The White House Accord on Superintelligence." He noted it includes "voluntary" commitments from the industry and "robust internal controls" and "layers of internal and external review."

Trump expressed confidence that his support for AI and data centers would not hurt Republicans in the upcoming elections, stating that "people love our country and love the world a lot," in response to concerns about AI risks and the need for government regulation.
