Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods

President Donald Trump on Monday imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, alleging unfair discrimination against American autos, alcohol, and dairy products.

The decision could trigger economic disruption, increased inflation, and further strain relations between the U.S. and Canada. An administration official stated Canada's prior retaliatory measures necessitated accountability.

The new tariffs, set to take effect in 30 days, exclude energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals. However, they include goods previously protected under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was not renewed by the U.S., opening a period of new negotiations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed belief in free and fair trade and readiness to negotiate. "This trade dispute has raised costs for families, particularly in the U.S.," Carney stated.

Canada faces the risk of broader trade war escalation. Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested reciprocal tariffs if the measures proceed. Candace Laing, CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, called the U.S. actions "regrettable" and urged using the 30-day window for meaningful talks.
