Trump Maintains Tariffs Amid Voter Disapproval

President Donald Trump is adhering to his tariff policy, imposing the highest import duties on U.S. trading partners since the Great Depression, even as these measures have led to higher prices and faced criticism.

A recent poll suggests this is a significant gamble with less than a month before the November 3 mid-term elections. A majority of U.S. adults disapprove of his trade policies, with over 64% stating he has gone too far with his latest tariffs, an increase from 58% in January.

The United States has imposed low double-digit tariffs on imports from most countries. These taxes have fluctuated due to legal setbacks and Trump's tendency to change them seemingly on a whim.

Trump's primary current tool is Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows him to impose tariffs on countries he believes engage in unfair trade practices. The new duties range from 10% to 12.5% and apply to imports from 60 economies, including major U.S. trading partners such as the European Union, India, Japan, Canada, and Mexico.
