President Donald Trump announced on September 19th his intention to form a dedicated "Artificial Intelligence Task Force." The initiative aims to capitalize on AI's perceived economic impact, with Trump stating that artificial intelligence could account for up to 25% of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Trump described AI as the "next industrial revolution or internet wave," suggesting its influence will surpass previous technological advancements. He plans to appoint a "czar" for AI affairs to oversee the task force. The administration's stance is to actively support and promote the growth of the AI industry, rather than impede it, countering what Trump termed efforts by "radical Democrats" to stifle development.
The President also indicated that existing legal frameworks would be utilized to prosecute any illegal activities related to artificial intelligence. This suggests a dual approach of fostering innovation while maintaining regulatory oversight.
Previously, Trump had publicly expressed skepticism about concerns over AI safety, referring to them as a "hoax" during an industry summit. He reportedly reassured Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang that AI would not "take over" or "rule the world."
