Trump Rejects Latest Iranian Proposal in New York Talks

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he rejected the latest Iranian proposal conveyed to the U.S. during indirect negotiations in New York this week.

"They have made a proposal and I rejected it," Trump stated. According to reports, U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a new round of indirect negotiations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Qatari officials participated in the talks, passing messages between the parties. Araghchi presented Iran's conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks within a week. Iran proposed the reopening and resumption of talks if the U.S. lifts its naval blockade, removes sanctions on oil sales, and reinstates a regional ceasefire.

U.S. negotiators made it clear to the Iranians during talks on Tuesday that Iran does not control the strait and therefore cannot make demands regarding it. Despite the lack of immediate agreement, U.S. officials claim "positive and constructive" discussions are still ongoing between the U.S. and Iran through mediators, including on nuclear issues.

Approximately 60 million barrels of oil have transited the Strait of Hormuz under U.S. protection in the last 72 hours, contributing to easing pressure on global markets. While this volume is below pre-war levels, it represents a significant daily oil transit.
