Trump Requests Upgrades for Air Force One

President Donald Trump has stated his intention to implement additional upgrades for the new Air Force One aircraft, a Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar. The plane, whose modifications are reportedly valued at $400 million, has faced scrutiny regarding its expedited timeline and security features.

Trump announced on Sunday that the plane would be "maxed out" within approximately one month, though he did not specify the nature of these enhancements. Previous modifications included new engines, airstairs, an additional door, and upgraded communications systems. However, reports suggest that advanced security measures, such as defensive countermeasures, are still lacking.

The aircraft undertook its maiden flight earlier this month. Subsequently, following a trip to Turkey for a NATO summit, the President opted to travel on a different plane for the return journey. While Trump initially attributed this to nostalgia, the New York Times reported that the decision was prompted by Secret Service concerns over the plane's insufficient defensive capabilities amid heightened tensions with Iran.

The refurbishment of the aircraft was reportedly conducted under a compressed schedule, with approximately 400 employees working for 10 months to meet a July 4 deadline. This accelerated process contrasts with the typical multi-year timeline for such modifications. Several Democratic senators have criticized the project for its lack of transparency and questioned the allocation of taxpayer funds and the consideration of national security implications.
