Trump Rules Out Joint AI Ventures with China
President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. will not enter into joint ventures with China on artificial intelligence. He cited risks of handing over American secrets to a primary economic rival.
President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States will not pursue joint ventures with China in the field of artificial intelligence. The President stated that such collaboration would equate to handing over sensitive U.S. secrets to America's main economic rival, emphasizing that the U.S. leads significantly in AI development.
Speaking at the launch of America.gov, Trump asserted that the AI competition is solely between the U.S. and China, with no room for third parties. He argued that while some advocate for AI collaboration with China, it would grant Beijing immediate access to information it currently lacks.
Trump confirmed that artificial intelligence was a topic during his meeting with President Xi Jinping, but he remains opposed to joint development. The leaders agreed to establish an AI incident notification hotline and continue discussions on AI risks. This rejection applies specifically to joint development and shared governance, not all forms of engagement.
The U.S. has a history of restricting semiconductor exports to China, while Beijing has faced accusations of copying American AI models. These actions and prior allegations of China attempting to steal U.S. AI secrets help explain Trump's reluctance to share information.
