Trump's 100% Drone Tariffs Warned to Harm US

The Trump administration announced a 100 percent tariff on imported drones that utilize thermal imaging or weigh more than 55 pounds, effective Thursday. The move has raised alarm among critics and industry observers concerned about its potential economic and safety impacts.

Guidance issued by US Customs and Border Protection details the new tariffs, which apply immediately to specified drone categories. Additionally, a 25 percent tariff has been placed on smaller drones. Drones from allied nations, including those from the UK, EU, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan, face smaller but still significant levies.

"Nonsensitive" drones without thermal imaging capabilities, along with their components, will be subject to a 25 percent tariff beginning February 9, 2027. Critics argue these tariffs could hinder critical applications, such as public safety and emergency response operations that rely on drone technology.

Industry analysts predict the new tariffs could lead to substantial cost increases for US companies that use or manufacture drones. Many businesses depend on foreign-made components or finished drones, and the increased import costs may impact their competitiveness and operational capacity.
