Trump's AI rebrand linked to 'unprecedented' demand for Slovenian website names

An initiative by former US President Donald Trump to rebrand Artificial Intelligence (AI) as "Super Intelligence" (SI) may be behind an "unprecedented" increase in registrations for Slovenian website domain names. This is according to the country's national domain name registry.

In September, 44,000 web addresses with the .si suffix were registered, a significant jump from fewer than 2,000 in August. Klara Herman, a spokesperson for Registry SI, described the activity in late September as "unprecedented" compared to previous years.

Trump first proposed renaming AI during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 11, arguing that the term "artificial" implies the technology is fake. He suggested "Super Intelligence" as a more fitting description.

While the registry expressed caution about attributing the entire increase solely to Trump's comments, one potential explanation cited is "cybersquatting" – where individuals speculatively purchase domain names with the hope of future profit.

Trump has also signed an executive order directing US government departments and agencies to stop using the term AI and to instead use "SI" and "Super Intelligence" in official correspondence and on websites.
