Trump's Clean Energy Policy Rollbacks Cost Billions in Lost Jobs and Investments

More than 200 major clean energy projects have been canceled, closed, or downsized between the start of 2025 and May 2026, according to a report by the nonprofit E2 and research firm BW Research. The policy changes, which dismantled federal clean energy incentives and reduced permitting, have had a substantial negative economic impact.

These cancellations include significant planned investments in battery factories and solar and wind farm development, totaling billions of dollars. The report estimates that the actions have led to the loss of nearly half a million jobs, encompassing both permanent roles and construction positions. Additionally, over $68 billion in private capital investment has been forfeited during construction phases.

The economic consequences extend beyond direct investments and employment. Lost GDP growth from canceled construction projects is estimated at $91 billion, with an additional $55 billion lost from ongoing operations. Tax revenues for local, state, and federal governments are also projected to be down by a combined $33 billion.

While the clean energy sector continues to grow, with solar and wind dominating new power plant installations, the pace of growth has slowed. Experts warn that the U.S. is missing out on significant investment and manufacturing opportunities, as foreign companies may choose to establish facilities elsewhere. Policy uncertainty poses a challenge for long-term investment decisions and hinders the potential for industrial resurgence.
