Trump's Latest AI Czar Resigns After Three Months

Chris Fall, director of the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), has resigned from his position, the agency confirmed. His departure occurs only three months after his appointment, highlighting a period of significant leadership changes within the organization.

Fall's predecessor, Collin Burns, had a similarly brief tenure, leaving the post in less than a week after his appointment. Reports from The Washington Post indicated that Burns was pressured to leave partly due to his previous work with Anthropic, a company that had been in conflict with the Trump administration.

No specific reason has been provided for Fall's resignation. Before leading CAISI, Fall served as the director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science during the first Trump administration and previously acted as director for ARPA-Energy.

CAISI, which operates under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is tasked with developing technical standards and testing methodologies for AI models, as well as assessing cybersecurity risks associated with artificial intelligence. The center was not involved in the recent incident in June where the U.S. Commerce Department temporarily banned Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models from the market.
