Trupanion Acquires Smart Paws for European Market Entry
Pet insurance provider Trupanion, Inc. has acquired German company Smart Paws GmbH, securing immediate access to Germany and Switzerland and accelerating European expansion.
Trupanion, Inc., a provider of medical insurance for cats and dogs, announced on August 31 the acquisition of Smart Paws GmbH. The deal provides Trupanion with immediate entry into the German and Swiss markets, supporting its international expansion strategy.
Smart Paws, founded by veterinary and insurance professionals, specializes in pet insurance and offers products tailored to the needs of animals and their owners. The company has established relationships with veterinary clinics in Germany and Switzerland.
Trupanion views continental Europe as an attractive market due to high per capita spending on pets and relatively low penetration of pet insurance. The acquisition of Smart Paws is expected to facilitate the company's presence in other key European countries.
The Smart Paws team will continue to manage its existing products and memberships as part of Trupanion's international organization. Trupanion does not anticipate a material financial impact on its 2022 results from this acquisition, and the financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
