Tsinghua University Ranks 11th Globally in THE 2027 Rankings, First in Asia

Tsinghua University has climbed to the 11th position in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2027 World University Rankings, making it the highest-ranked institution in Asia. The university surpassed ETH Zurich, previously Europe's top-ranked university, in a historic move that signifies the first time an Asian university has outranked a continental European institution in this ranking.

The 2027 THE rankings included 2,297 universities from 118 countries and regions. The University of Oxford in the UK retained its top spot for the 11th consecutive year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US secured second place, while Princeton University and Stanford University tied for third.

The overall top ten remains dominated by UK and US institutions, with the US holding seven spots. This year, China saw significant progress, with Tsinghua at 11th and Peking University at 13th. The National University of Singapore also rose to 15th. This marks the first time three Asian universities have simultaneously placed within the top 15. The number of Chinese universities in the top 200 increased by four from the previous year, with 71% improving their standing.

The THE World University Rankings assess universities across teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income, and international outlook using 17 performance indicators. The analysis highlights a resurgence in Asian universities' performance, particularly in East and Southeast Asia, driven by improvements in research-related metrics. This trend suggests growing influence for Asian higher education on the global stage.
