Turkey Travel Requirements: Passport Not Always Mandatory

Travel search engine KAYAK Europe GmbH has published a guide detailing entry requirements for German citizens traveling to Turkey. The information indicates that entry into the country is possible without a passport, provided a valid German identity card is presented.

This is based on Turkey's participation in the European Agreement on the Abolition of Visas for Travel on Certificates of Identity, which allows citizens of signatory countries to travel without a passport. German citizens receive an entry card upon arrival instead of a passport stamp.

However, KAYAK advises that a passport may be necessary for onward travel from Turkey to other countries. Many airlines and third countries require a passport with a specific remaining validity, especially for connecting flights or transit. Longer stays or employment in Turkey typically require a visa and more detailed documentation.

The guide clarifies that German nationals need either an identity card, passport, temporary passport, or child's passport for entry. Provisional identity cards may not always be accepted in practice. Passports must also meet certain criteria regarding blank pages and validity, particularly when applying for residency or undertaking extended trips.
