TV Viewing Increases Amidst Consumer Demand for Escape
Despite competition from streaming services, linear television has seen increased viewership during recent challenging times. Audiences are seeking stability and a distraction from reality.

Living rooms are once again becoming focal points for television viewers seeking entertainment and reliable information amidst uncertain times. The smart TV landscape, however, presents a multitude of new competitors vying for audience attention.
Media psychologists identify "mood management" as a prevalent behavior during crises, where individuals utilize media content to regulate their emotional state. Since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a significant surge in demand for entertainment-focused programming. Researchers note a widespread desire for normalcy, daily structure, and a diversion from current events, making television an appealing escape.
Linear television has played a role in this viewership increase. In 2020, Germans spent an average of 3 hours and 40 minutes per day watching TV, a rise of 10 minutes from the previous year. This counters a downward trend observed in recent years and solidifies television's role, particularly for live sports, entertainment, and up-to-date information.
While younger demographics (14-29 years old) have increasingly gravitated towards streaming platforms, their television consumption has stabilized. Their daily viewing time remains substantial, despite a decrease since 2015. Attention is now divided across numerous platforms, yet television retains its position as a key content provider.
