TXP Medical releases analysis on real-world evidence landscape in Japan
A new whitepaper from TXP Medical examines the role of real-world data in the Japanese pharmaceutical sector, forecasting significant growth in electronic health record-derived insights by 2035.
TXP Medical has published a whitepaper titled "The State of Japanese Real-World Evidence," detailing the current integration of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) within Japan's healthcare system. This report marks the first publication from the company’s reorganized Medical Data Lab and provides strategic guidance for pharmaceutical Medical Affairs departments on selecting appropriate data sources.
The report projects the Japanese market for secondary use of healthcare data to reach 85 billion yen by 2035, up from 35 billion yen in 2025. A significant portion of this growth is expected to come from electronic medical record (EMR) data, which is projected to see a 26% compound annual growth rate through 2030. The analysis highlights that RWE is increasingly utilized in regulatory approvals, appearing in over 30% of new drug and regenerative medicine applications in 2024, compared to approximately 18% five years earlier.
TXP Medical advocates for a "fit-for-purpose" approach, suggesting that the choice between claims data and EMR data should be dictated by specific clinical questions rather than a one-size-fits-all model. EMR data is highlighted as uniquely valuable for capturing nuances such as disease severity, biomarker findings, and the reasoning behind clinical interventions, which standard claims data often lack.
The findings are supported by insights from TXP Medical’s internal data platform, which integrates records from 56 university and regional core hospitals covering over 26 million patients. The unit is now led by Dr. Tymo Nakao, a former McKinsey & Company consultant, who oversees the company’s efforts in clinical phenotyping and evidentiary research.
