Uber agrees to acquire Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion

Uber has agreed to acquire Delivery Hero in an all-stock deal valued at $14.8 billion. The transaction, which is expected to nearly double Uber's global reach, would significantly bolster its position in the delivery and food transportation markets.

Concurrently, Delivery Hero will sell its business operations in 14 markets to the U.S.-based investment firm SSW Partners for $1.6 billion, areas where Uber Eats already operates. The combined entity is poised to become one of the largest food delivery platforms globally, excluding China.

The acquisition is not yet finalized and is anticipated to face regulatory scrutiny. Uber, already the largest shareholder in Delivery Hero, has set a minimum acceptance threshold of 50% plus one share. Prosus, another major shareholder, has committed to selling its 17% stake.

If successful, the deal would place Uber in a stronger competitive stance against rivals such as DoorDash and Just Eat Takeaway. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the combined company will nearly double the number of markets where it offers both mobility and delivery services, thereby creating significant long-term value for customers and shareholders.
