Uber Product Chief Discusses Expansion into Hotels, Robotaxis

Uber, widely known for its ride-hailing and delivery services, is expanding its offerings to include hotel bookings through a partnership with Expedia and financial services for drivers, such as debit cards. The company is also exploring new ventures beyond its core operations.

Internally, Uber has launched AV Labs, a unit dedicated to gathering driving data for autonomous vehicle partners. This initiative utilizes sensor-equipped vehicles and aims to strengthen Uber's relationships with key players in the autonomous vehicle technology sector, in which Uber also holds equity.

The strategic expansion includes significant investments in data collection, with AV Labs serving as a crucial component. This move positions Uber to leverage its data capabilities to gain leverage and maintain options in a competitive market, particularly concerning its complex relationships with autonomous vehicle developers like Waymo.

Kansal stated that Uber's strategy is not to become "everything for everyone" but to focus on carefully selected areas for growth, emphasizing a strategic rather than a scattergun approach to diversification.
