UChicago Medicine Completes Construction on New Cancer Pavilion, Opening Set for 2027

University of Chicago Medicine (UChicago Medicine) announced on September 24, 2026, the completion of the construction phase for the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion. This milestone marks a significant step toward transforming cancer care, research, and access on Chicago's South Side.

The 575,000-square-foot facility is one of UChicago Medicine's largest projects and will be the state's first and only center dedicated exclusively to cancer. The construction represents a substantial investment in the region, aiming to expand access to advanced cancer treatment and improve health outcomes for the communities it serves.

Cancer remains a significant health challenge, particularly on Chicago's South Side, where cancer death rates are nearly twice the national average. The AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion is designed to address this disparity by consolidating cancer specialists, advanced diagnostics, treatments, clinical trials, and support services into a single, patient-centered environment.

The project received partial funding through a $75 million donation from the AbbVie Foundation, which focuses on reducing health inequities and advancing innovative solutions in underserved communities. The pavilion is scheduled to open to patients in April 2027 and is expected to serve approximately 200,000 outpatient visits and 5,000 inpatient admissions annually.

With construction now complete, UChicago Medicine will enter the final phase, which involves equipping clinical spaces, testing systems and workflows, and training staff for the new environment.
