UChicago Medicine completes construction phase for cancer pavilion

University of Chicago Medicine announced on September 24, 2026, the completion of the construction phase for the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion. The 575,000-square-foot center, located on UChicago Medicine's main campus in Hyde Park, represents one of the academic health system's largest and most ambitious projects.

The completion of construction marks a significant milestone in the effort to transform cancer care, research, and access, particularly for Chicago's South Side. The project is intended to expand access to advanced cancer treatment in the region and improve health outcomes for the communities served by UChicago Medicine.

The new seven-story pavilion will consolidate cancer specialists, advanced diagnostics, treatments, clinical trials, patient navigation, and support services. This integrated model is designed to enhance coordination among multidisciplinary teams and create a more cohesive patient experience. Once fully operational, the pavilion is projected to serve approximately 200,000 outpatient visits and 5,000 inpatient admissions annually.

The project is partly supported by a $75 million donation from the AbbVie Foundation, which aims to address health disparities and accelerate solutions in underserved communities. UChicago Medicine operates a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only a few in the country.
