The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has confirmed that several UK-based organizations have been targeted in a series of cyber-attacks affecting commercial refrigeration units. These incidents are part of a broader trend of attacks across Europe, where hackers have manipulated the temperature settings of cold storage systems by exploiting known software vulnerabilities.

NCSC Chief Executive Dr. Richard Horne stated that the agency has been working to alert affected entities. While the impact within the UK has been characterized as limited, the broader European campaign has caused significant spoilage of fresh and frozen goods in countries including France, Sweden, and Belgium.

Experts attribute the success of these attacks to the failure of many companies to decommission or secure legacy systems that remain connected to the internet. These vulnerabilities, often identified by researchers months in advance, serve as accessible entry points for malicious actors.

Horne noted that the use of artificial intelligence by adversaries is accelerating the discovery and exploitation of these security flaws. He urged businesses to prioritize the modernization of their technology infrastructure, emphasizing that internal investment in cybersecurity is critical for preventing operational disruptions.
