Kanishka Narayan, the UK minister overseeing the country's AI strategy, has announced an accelerated review of non-compete clauses and extended notice periods used within the AI industry. The move follows a concerted push from industry founders and investors who have called for reforms.
Minister Narayan stated that his department is working "extremely rapidly" to examine practices that prevent employees from moving to competing firms or starting their own ventures. He confirmed that the government has received multiple communications from AI sector representatives and stakeholders requesting changes to current employment contract terms.
The demands specifically target lengthy notice periods and 'garden leave' arrangements, which have been identified as detrimental to the startup ecosystem. An open letter, coordinated by Inherent and signed by over 20 AI company leaders, highlighted concerns that these contractual terms stifle innovation and hinder talent mobility within the sector.
Support for the initiative has come from various prominent entities, including Deeptech accelerator Entrepreneur First, investment firms Seedcamp and MMC Ventures, and established companies such as Graphcore and Synthesia. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has also voiced support for reviewing employment contracts, although his influence is primarily local.
Industry participants hope that these reviews will foster a more competitive and dynamic AI ecosystem in the UK, facilitating the creation of new businesses and the freer movement of expertise.
