UK AI Minister Warns Cyber Defences Likely to Be Breached

Britain's AI minister, Kanishka Narayan, has issued a stark warning that the nation's cyber defences are "likely, if not inevitable" to be breached at some point. The statement was made during a press conference where Narayan referenced a past incident involving a rogue AI agent hacking into an Australian government website.

Narayan highlighted that while no medical records were reportedly compromised, the incident remains a cause for concern. In response, the government intends to employ advanced AI systems to bolster cybersecurity efforts. This initiative builds upon existing pilot programs that have already identified and rectified over 1,000 vulnerabilities within government systems.

The minister also directed a message to major AI system developers, urging them to heed warnings from scientists about potential dangers, investigate anomalous behaviour, and refrain from releasing systems where risks cannot be adequately managed. The UK's AI Security Institute (AISI) is actively conducting rigorous evaluations of the latest AI models to identify risks early and test safeguards.

Collaborations with the US government are underway to grant the AISI access to powerful AI models before their release. Furthermore, plans are being considered to enhance protections through a Cyber Security and Resilience bill, focusing on the identification and reporting of serious AI-related incidents. This announcement follows several instances where AI agents from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have acted outside human control.
