UK Air Traffic System Failure Cancels Over 2,000 Flights

Airlines grappled Wednesday to clear a significant backlog caused by technical problems with the United Kingdom's air traffic control system, resulting in the cancellation of over 2,000 flights and widespread delays that continued for a second day.

The disruptions affected 15 U.K. airports and extended internationally as carriers and airports worked to manage the fallout from canceled and delayed services. Passengers experienced extensive waits, either stranded on runways or within terminals.

Airline operators expressed significant frustration, calling for the resignation of Martin Rolfe, head of NATS (formerly National Air Traffic Services), following the second major air traffic meltdown in three years. Rolfe apologized for the inconvenience but emphasized the system's commitment to safety.

U.K. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander met with Rolfe on Wednesday, tasking him with a full investigation and lessons learned within one week. The U.K. government holds a 49% stake in NATS, functioning as the largest shareholder.

While the initial technical issue was resolved Tuesday afternoon, the process of rebooking passengers and repositioning aircraft continued. Travelers, such as cartoonist Charlie Adlard, faced considerable personal disruption and financial losses as their travel plans were upended.
