UK airports to implement biometric border control technology

The UK Home Office and Border Force have initiated a deployment of contactless border control technology across 13 major international airports. Developed by travel technology firm Amadeus, the system utilizes facial recognition to verify identity against stored travel and immigration data, effectively removing the requirement for passengers to present physical passports at eGates.

The initial phase of the rollout, which began on October 6, is restricted to UK citizens. Authorities intend to expand access to foreign nationals, including those from the European Union and the United States, in subsequent phases, provided they possess valid electronic travel authorizations. Passengers who fail the automated verification process will be redirected to manual checks by Border Force officers.

This project represents a significant digital shift in UK border management. Phil Douglas, director general of the UK Border Force, stated that the technology aims to streamline the transit process while maintaining existing security standards. The full implementation of the contactless gates across all participating airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester, is scheduled for completion in early 2025.
