UK Appoints First Cabinet-Level AI Minister

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has named Kanishka Narayan as the UK's AI minister, marking the first time the position has been elevated to cabinet level. This move places AI policy directly within the government's highest decision-making body.

Narayan, a former venture capitalist and MP from Wales, was initially appointed as a junior minister responsible for AI and online safety in September last year. The new designation concentrates his responsibilities specifically on AI, integrating him into the core group of government ministers.

The role will sit across the newly formed department for business, innovation, science, and trade, as well as the cabinet office. The UK follows international precedents, with countries like France and Canada having established similar high-level AI minister positions in recent years.

Narayan has received positive feedback from the technology sector. Matt Clifford, a former AI advisor to the government, commented on Narayan's understanding of the field's opportunities and his energetic approach to the role. Liz Kendall, previously the technology secretary, departed her position following the cabinet reshuffle.
