UK Government Awards BAE Systems £5.9 Billion Contract for Submarine Program

The UK Government has awarded BAE Systems a new £5.9 billion contract to advance the nation's Dreadnought Class nuclear deterrent submarine programme. This funding will support continued progress on the first submarine, named Dreadnought, which is expected to enter service with the Royal Navy in the early 2030s. The contract also covers ongoing construction of the second submarine, Valiant, and fabrication work for the remaining two vessels, Warspite and King George VI.

The four-submarine Dreadnought Class programme is set to replace the current Vanguard Class fleet, also built by BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness. The programme's primary objective is to ensure the continuation of the United Kingdom's Continuous at Sea Deterrent capability. BAE Systems states these submarines will be the largest, most powerful, and technologically advanced ever constructed for the Royal Navy.

This £5.9 billion contract for BAE Systems is part of a larger £8.4 billion package approved by Parliament for the Ministry of Defence. The programme is being delivered in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise. The overall Dreadnought programme supports approximately 30,000 jobs across the UK, with over 7,000 employed directly by BAE Systems.

Total spending across the programme to date has reached £8.9 billion, involving over 1,500 UK suppliers. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting highlighted that this investment strengthens Barrow's historical role in submarine construction and supports the government's commitment to delivering the submarines while backing British industry. The initiative combines Barrow's maritime heritage with modern technology to enhance national security.
