UK tech sector criticizes reported plans to dismantle DSIT

Reported plans by incoming UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to dismantle the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) have drawn sharp criticism from across the country's tech sector. Industry leaders warn that breaking up the department at a critical juncture risks undermining the UK's technological agenda.
The plans reportedly involve integrating parts of the three-year-old department into a strengthened business department, while transferring other responsibilities elsewhere. Jonathan Reynolds is expected to return as Business Secretary, potentially absorbing science policy as part of a broader Whitehall reshuffling.
Founders, investors, and policy leaders within the tech industry have expressed dismay. They argue that further departmental reorganizations would consume time better spent delivering on the UK's artificial intelligence and digital ambitions. Vinous Ali, deputy executive director at Startup Coalition, stated that DSIT has become established over three years, and changes would undermine this work.
Experts like Ian Hogarth, partner at Plural, and former government AI advisor Matt Clifford, have warned that such re-organizations cause significant distractions and divert resources and time, potentially slowing growth and technological progress. DSIT was established in 2023 to consolidate responsibility for science, AI, digital regulation, and innovation, and has overseen several key initiatives.
