UK Uses Virtual Reality for Pharmaceutical Industry Training

The United Kingdom has launched the RESILIENCE program, utilizing virtual reality (VR) to train individuals in pharmaceutical manufacturing and emerging therapies such as gene therapy. The initiative aims to combat the growing shortage of skilled labor and equip new professionals for an evolving industry.

According to RESILIENCE director Ivan Wall, the program is part of the UK government's efforts to bolster the life sciences sector. The production of advanced therapies, including cell and gene therapies derived from individual patient cells, presents a significant departure from traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing. Conventional training methods for these processes would incur high costs and considerable environmental impact due to material consumption and disposal.

By employing VR, training can be conducted without the need for physical presence in cleanroom environments. This approach reduces expenses, logistical challenges, and environmental footprint. VR simulations offer a safe and less stressful setting for participants to practice complex procedures, thereby enhancing their confidence and proficiency before commencing actual job duties.

The program has already seen successful pilot implementations, including at Heriot-Watt University. New employees have been trained on plant or laboratory processes using VR headsets from their first day of work. University students have also utilized VR for training, such as setting up bioreactors and practicing process flows. The program's objective is to train up to 150,000 new professionals within the UK's pharmaceutical industry over the next decade.
