New findings from the 2025–2026 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) indicate that 74% of newborns in Ukraine received breast milk within the first hour of birth, a crucial step for maternal and infant health.
However, the survey also reveals that only 43% of infants aged 0–5 months are exclusively breastfed, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
The gap between initial breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding at six months highlights potential challenges. These may include returning to work, insufficient support systems, or a lack of continued information and access to resources for mothers.
Health officials and international organizations are emphasizing the importance of continued exclusive breastfeeding and are calling for enhanced support measures for mothers. Further efforts are needed to understand and address the barriers to maintaining exclusive breastfeeding throughout the recommended period.
